Drake ship The Golden Hind sailed ever northward stopping now and then to attack the small towns on the coast . In California he fell in with Indians who had never seen a white man. They took him and his company for gods. Soon after this he gave up hope of finding his way home round America and resolved to sail across the pacific Ocean. He had a prosperous voyage and soon reached the Philippine Islands. Here he bought an ample supply of provisions for his sailors. He also met a Chinaman of high rank who tried to persuade him to visit the emperor of China. But all the company were now anxious to reach home again. Therefore Drake refused the tempting offer. After touching at java he sailed straight across the Indian ocean to the cape of GOOD Hope the southern point of Africa.
And so at last in 1580. The Golden Hind after a voyage of three years came back to Plymouth. She had encircled the entire globe . Well can we imagine the amazements and joy with which she was hailed and how the tale of her voyage spread throughout the land. Drake was now the most famous of all English seamen. He had dealt the Spaniards and their navy a hard blow and he had returned the possessor of untold wealth.
He went to London where he was received with great honour . Queen Elizabeth came down the river to see him. She mounted the deck of his ship and knighted him for his exploits. It seemed as if he had accomplished all that he hope to do yet eight years later the Spanish Armada was due chiefly to the work of this great sailor.
