Whilst my two friends and I, sitting astride a log which floated on the water. We’re intent on trying to catch fish with the rough hooks and lines we had made. Our attention was suddenly attracted by a ripple on the sea ,just a few yards away from us. PeterKin shouted to us to paddle I that direction as he thought it was a big fish. And we might have a chance of catching it.
But Jack ,instead of doing as peterkin said,replied ,in a deep serious voice which I never before heard him use,” pull up your line ,peterkin, seize our paddle ,quick ……..it’s a shark!”
The horror with which we heard this may well be imagined ,for it must be remembered that our legs were hanging down in the water and we dare not pull them up without upsetting the log. Peterkin immediately pulled in his line and seizing his paddle. Worked hard as he could ,while we also did our best to make to the shore.
But we were a long way off and the log being heavy only moved slowly through the water. It was making up it’s mind to attack us. Jack called to us to paddle for our lives. Then suddenly he shouted , ” look out ! there he comes! ” and in a second we saw the monstrous fish dive close under us. But we all made a great noise with our paddles, which no doubt frightened it away for that time.
” Throw the fish to him ,” cried Jack in a quick ,excited voice. We’ll reach the shore in time , if we can keep him off for a few minutes. “
